Excellence:

We hold ourselves to the highest possible standards. We are obsessively devoted to quality. We will never settle for doing anything in a casual, sloppy way. We intend to be the very best at what we do, and we train actors who intend to be the very best at what they do. End of story.

Terry Knickerbocker Studio is a Meisner acting school located in Brooklyn. Our belief in a holistic approach to actor training is the source of our unwavering commitment to nurturing the total actor: body, mind, and soul.  We offer an affordable alternative to MFA programs, without sacrificing quality. Our world-class faculty rigorously trains the actor to succeed in a highly competitive industry. We seek students who are diverse, generous, curious, collaborative, open-hearted, spirited, uncompromising, and real. The work we do at the Terry Knickerbocker Studio exemplifies impeccable integrity, joyous practice, bold choices, and a lively sense of play.

Terry Knickerbocker spent over 30 years training and teaching with William Esper, one of the most respected protegés of Sanford Meisner. Terry is one of only a very few active teachers who can claim to be part of a direct lineage of Sanford Meisner and his brilliant approach to actor training. He is also a core faculty member and alumnus of the Experimental Theatre Wing at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts.

I have never taken an acting class. Can I still study at TK Studio?

How much or little experience a student has is less important than their sincere desire and commitment to becoming the best actors they can be.

You've mentioned the "Meisner Technique" a few times. What is it?

The Meisner Technique is an approach to acting developed by the American practitioner Sanford Meisner, based on the idea that “The foundation to acting is the reality of doing.” Anyone interested in learning more is encouraged to read Sanford Meisner’s book, On Acting. All students interested in enrolling are encouraged to read On Acting prior to being interviewed for any and all programs.

There are a lot of “Meisner” Studios - what makes TK Studio different?

“Meisner training” is very popular these days. Very few teachers are masters at it, and many mis-teach it. Terry spent over 30 years training and teaching with William Esper, one of the most respected protegés of  Sanford Meisner at the renowned Neighborhood Playhouse. Terry is one of only a very few active teachers who can claim to be part of a direct lineage of Sanford Meisner and his brilliant approach to actor training.

Terry Knickerbocker Studio is devoted to building a tribe of committed artists. We are selective about our admissions process. Many Studios follow the mantra, “If you have a heartbeat and a credit card, you can study here” – Terry Knickerbocker Studio does not. We would rather have one class of 8 dedicated artists, than five classes filled with non-committed students.

Will Terry Knickerbocker be my teacher for the Acting Conservatory?

That depends. While everyone enrolling would want Terry to be their instructor, Terry specializes in the Meisner Technique, which is only a portion of the entire curriculum. We also need to allocate the proper instructor to student ratio. With that being said, the sooner you apply, the more likely you are to have Terry as your teacher! Fear not, however, as our instructors would not teach here if they were not great!

The Two Year Conservatory is for students who are committed to being the best actor they can be and are willing to do whatever it takes to reach their goals of personal and artistic excellence.  On a practical level, this means the committed actor needs to dedicate themselves to serious training.

The curriculum is designed to train a student's entire instrument - body and voice – in addition to their acting classes. When competing with actors who went to Yale, Juilliard, and NYU – conservatory training is the model that gives these actors their edge.

Students will develop core acting skills rooted in the Meisner Technique - learn how to listen deeply, respond truthfully, and express authentic emotional life under rich imaginary circumstances. Students expand their self-awareness, sensitivities, and empathy by working with imaginary circumstances of their own devising.

The movement curriculum provides a parallel vocabulary and toolset for developing the physical side of the emotionally demanding Meisner training.

The Voice curriculum develops the actor’s self-awareness and understanding of relaxation and openness. Students should expect to dedicate 20-25 hours per week.

About Us

Trustworthiness:

Quite simply, our word is our bond. If we say it, we mean it. We keep our agreements. Period. And we fully expect our students and artistic family to do the same with us and each other. We’re reliable. And so are our students.

Learning and Growth:

Our faculty, staff, and students are here to facilitate the exploration and expansion of our knowledge of art and life, and specifically our understanding of the art and craft of acting. Every class, every rehearsal, every time we sit down to do our artistic homework, every moment in life offers us an opportunity to learn and to grow. We teach tools and a process to achieve that.

“I first took an acting class from Terry Knickerbocker more than 25 years ago. Since then I have worked with him on every film and stage role I’ve done. Nobody’s better at what he does. Terry is incredibly intuitive and full of ideas that are usually outside the box. His sense of what is truthful is like a laser. I depend on him. He’s invaluable to me and I don’t know what I’d do without him.”
